Blessed are we, the people of a large community!

Todd, North Carolina

The people of Todd are promoting food security and self agency through their volunteer community garden that coincides with their mobile market, Todd's Table. People suffering food insecurity are now able to get fresh, healthy produce "free of charge." North Carolina is extraordinarily diverse in its capabilities to grow food, and now the people do not have to rely on cheap innutritious foods. Instead, the community gardens allow internships and apprenticeships as well as general guidance and teachings on how to start and maintain a garden.

"During last year’s growing season, Blackburn Community Outreach grew 1,730 pounds of food, 880 pounds of which was donated through the organization’s different programs." -Aleah Warner, 2017.

To attain a larger diversity of fruits and vegetables, the garden coordinators are trying to work towards a permaculture design and an orchard. For the first time, the community of Todd is selling their produce (on a pay-as-you-can basis) to help promote the future sustainability of these plans and programs. Todd's table strives to go beyond food pantries filled with canned goods. Instead, the best will be brought to the table.
