My name is Miranda, which is believed to mean "worthy of admiration", however I like to think I am the one who does the admiring. From here to there, I continue to learn from and adore everyone that makes my acquaintance. In The Tempest, a magician isolated his daughter on an island, where she-- Miranda-- was raised and educated.
Many of you may have heard the quote, "no man is an island." I believe John Donne was correct; everything is interconnected and everyone is involved in mankind. My blog title, Educated Beyond the Island represents the lessons and wisdom that I hope to gain from others. My personal place of education? The mountains of North Carolina. As a student of Appalachian State University and the mountains themselves, I learned as much from the trees as Shakespeare's character learned from the sea's. That doesn't however, account for the people and communities around me that have really solidified my education.
I study sustainable development; most of my work deals with capable communities made of fantastic individuals with more skills and trades than you would imagine. I love to help connect people and get communities off their feet, not under anyone else's. To do that, I must come in with an open mind, and open heart, and humility to know that I do not know what is best for anyone. This means "forgetting what you know" and learning to learn. However, using my acquired skills and past experience, I can help others achieve the greatness they desire-- in a way that makes sense to them. My father is no magician, but he did teach me some tricks to hold up my sleeve.
I believe compassion is the key to healthy communities, and I believe compassion comes from communication. So, here we are. I hope to hear from you and learn from you, as much as I hope to share some things that I have learned over the years. So, let's keep walking!
See you again soon!
